Excerpt from The Lamplighter
Haunted Hearts She became a frequent con tributor to The Atlantic Monthly and other magazines. But her sudden popularity left her quite unspoiled. A singular modesty, a childlike simplicity, a deep and beauti ful religious faith, were the qualities that endeared her to her friends and that are still evidenced by what was written of her at her death, which occurred in Dorchester October 1, 1866. As her pastor, Rev. Nathaniel Hall, declared in his memorial discourse, She received her success with a simple gladness, less that she was famous than that she might be useful; less that she had gained the public's applause than that she had touched, to issues human and philanthropic, the public's heart, and caused her poor 'lamplighter' to be the means of illumining other and direr darkness than that of night.

A wonderful book reminiscent of the rich writing style of Jane Austen, The Lamplighter however, is full of characters seeking more than a husband, they see to know the truth of who God is as they face the trials and tribulations of this life. This book follows little orphaned Gertie from her poor wretched home as a child to her home with the loving and caring lamplighter. Over time her world is blessed with people who show her love in spite of her "lowly" birth and lack of "beauty". In the warmth of those around her she is not sheltered from trial as of course they do still come. But with their guidance and example she learns where true peace and happiness comes from. A wonderful read, and very difficult to put down! This story is a true gem and is a true treasure to be shared with the entire family. The Kindle version does contain some typos, but for $1.99 it's a bargain!

The Lamplighter Classic Reprint Maria S Cummins 9781331214946 Books Reviews
Because of the print it is extremely hard to read. The contents may or may not be of some quality, but I probably will not read it because the print is so hard on the eyes.
I love the story of The Lamplighter, but this paperback version of The Lamplighter, published by General Books LLC is full of mistakes! I own an original version of The Lamplighter. This gives me an accurate reference. The paperback is full of typographical errors. The first two pages have 8 errors. Also, the story does not flow properly. For example, in order to follow the story as it was written on page 18, you must turn to page 26 to continue the story! I had planned to give this as a gift, but now am going to get a refund. I am very disappointed.
Although the book is the same words as one I got from a friend, it is a poor reproduction with vague type face and large format. OK but not what I expected.
I was really looking forward to this book and it was more enjoyable than I expected. However, after I learned that this copy was missing some things, I was sorely disappointed. The original was around 523 pages and the text has been altered (I compared with another print). I'm not sure why a Collector's book would change the text in this way. Is it better? I don't know, but I would have liked the full experience of this unsung early-American artwork. I am waiting on a used copy from an antique dealer.
I love this book! I’m glad I was able to find this at a good price!
What I liked best about this book, which was written about 1850, is that even though it is fiction, it gives you a peek into how life was in the middle of the 19th century. Very different from what you would get from a novel written today about that time period.
I opened up this book last night and had to almost immediately put it down. The number of errors on just pages 1 and 2 alone were so many that I could not read this book. I don't want to spend 312 pages trying to figure out that "parity" should be instead "purity." There is a poem at the start of the story which is four lines long and in this edition, the word "Ljutdox" ends the poem. I pulled up the book online from a free site and it should have read "Landon." On page 2, the word given is "Bo" when it should be "so." I am returning my copy this week.
